Please call me AVIM

February 8th, 2006

H.I.M (HAO Input Method) is now AVIM (Advanced Vietnamese Input Method). The reason for the name change is that “him” is a very common English word. Searching for H.I.M on any search engine therefore usually wouldn’t yield any interesting result, hopefully AVIM will serve better as a name.

The new download link for AVIM is now: https://sourceforge.net/projects/rhos (*NOTE*: it is https *NOT* http). The old download link (http://avim.veneroida.com/pro/him.js) is still available for the time being but there is no promise on my part that it will be there forever, so please use the new link instead.

XGL & Compiz

February 10th, 2006

This is one of the most exciting, interesting, incredible & jaw dropping things I have seen in a long loooooong time. XGL is a graphics subsystem and Compiz is the compositing manager that come with it, both are developed by Novell led by David Reveman. In short, this will make your Linux desktop much more beautiful than Windows Vista or Mac OS X. Don’t believe me? See for yourself

  1. True transparency .mpg (12MB) | .ogg (3.7MB) | streaming flash
  2. Zoom .mpg (8.5MB) | streaming flash
  3. Desktop organization .mpg (16MB) | .ogg (5.7MB) | streaming flash
  4. Spinning cube .mpg (16MB) | .ogg (7.1MB) | streaming flash

I particularly love the spinning cube. What can I say? Beautiful, practical & innovative. Simply excellent.

Even better, you don’t really have to use NLD or SuSE to be benefits from these great innovations, Novell has recently decided to contribute the source code of these 2 projects to the X.org project, the source code is now available on freedesktop.org CVS repository (http://cvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/xorg/hw/xgl/).

Still think 2006 is not the year of Linux desktop? You must be joking.

More than a week

February 24th, 2006

Yes, it has been more than a week without any new post. Some of you may wonder am I dead? Now you know that I’m still alive and well but I was very busy with the assignments. Now that I’ve submitted all of my assignments, I finally have time to write something for this blog.

Yesterday I coughed up £55 to buy “The TCP/IP Guide” by Charles M. Kozierok, that is a very expensive book indeed. And just as I was on the train home, opened the book and read through a few first pages and found this:

This book had its origins as an online website, called appropriately enough, The TCP/IP Guide. The site is still active and presents the same information as this book contains, albeit in a slightly different format and structure.

So, turned out I paid £55 for something I could have got for free. Anyway, at least it is a very good and comprehensive book and some of the money will go back to its author for his excellent work.

AVIM 20060318 beta

March 19th, 2006

OK, so my last entry was on 24-2. That’s nearly 4 weeks ago. Now I admit that the reason for that long period between 2 posts is because I’m a little bit lazy - OK, maybe very. But I’ve justification though.

Last week I had my final exams and thus moved a little bit closer to my graduation at the end of the year. I did quite well on all 4 of the exams but not really entirely satisfied. Moreover, my client doesn’t care about my exams, the deadline is still the deadline and I have to finish the software by tomorrow (20-3), luckily, I finished it yesterday and have just done some small modifications this morning.

Now, here is something to cheer about. I’ve just done AVIM 20060318, changes including:

  1. The file size is decreased by 153 bytes
  2. Typing ddaangsw will yield đắng instead of đấngw.

I know it is not much but there is only so much you can do for a typing method. I can’t think of any improvement right now, if you have any suggestions however, feel free to contact me.

You can test AVIM 20060318 beta at http://avim.veneroida.com/beta/himtest.html, it will stay beta until 1-4, if there is still no error report then, I will upload AVIM 20060318 to SourceForge file server and it will officially become stable.

AVIM 20060318 has been released.

April 2nd, 2006

The title said it all. This is just to announce that AVIM 20060318 has been released to SourceForge repository after 2 weeks without any bugs reported. All users are recommended to upgrade to the latest version ASAP. The beta test page at http://avim.veneroida.com/beta has been deleted and the official test page at http://avim.veneroida.com/pro/himtest.html has been updated accordingly.

New Record

May 27th, 2006

This is my new record for download speed from torrents. This time it is OpenSuSE 10.1 Add-ons CD at 795.6KB/s. Actually, once it went up to around 860KB/s but I wasn’t quick enough to hit PrintScreen.

HDDLife for Notebook

June 7th, 2006

I’ve just received some bug reports on the softwares that I did for Lewis Accommodation. I could have debugged it with Windows running under VMWare but like always, VMWare is too slow, especially for CPU intensive jobs like compiling, beside, I’ve got a new contract to develop another software so I decided to install Windows instead.

All in all, it has been a very bad experience. For some reason, after every 1 minute or so, the CPU usage rocketed way up to 100% with frequent burst to around 50% which make the computer almost unusable for about 5 seconds. I know that 5 seconds is not much but imagine having to stop for 5 seconds every 1 minute when you are working, very annoying indeed. I think it might be because of some updates I installed from Windows Update website since consulting Windows Task Manager processes list didn’t shed any light. View the screenshot below to see what happened when the laptop is completely idle, with probably the exception of BitComet downloading a file at around 50KB/s (click on it to view full size - 1024×768).

Windows Hell

However, there are still things to cheer about. Firstly, I fixed the bugs. Secondly, I managed to annoy my manager so much that he called the control sheet my software generated “the control shit”. Thirdly, HDDLife for Notebook. What is HDDLife for Notebook? It is a utility that allows you to view the current state of your hard drive using the S.M.A.R.T technology. There are 3 versions, a standard version which is free but limited in features, a professional version ($29) which is a lot more useful and a version for laptop ($49).

As you can see from the screenshot below (full size 1024 x 768), it allows you to view the hard drive’s performance, its running temperature, even how long your hard drive has been running (in my case it is 8092 hours), but the most valuable information is the hard drive’s health. Basically, what this mean is the chance of failure of your hard drive, you should seriously consider replacing the hard drive or at least backing up your important data if your hard drive’s health goes too low. What made this software great is that it will give you a detailed conclusion in pure & plain human language (there are currently 18 languages available) based on the result which made it easy to use even for a chimp. Having had 2 broken hard drives in the past few years, this is becoming one of my must have softwares. The only problem is that it is currently only available for Windows, hopefully BinarySense (the company behind HDDLife) will develop a Linux version soon.

HDDLife for Notebook

When minimized, HDDLife sit comfortably on the system tray and display your hard drive’s health status or its temperature or simply just the program icon (configurable). Another very useful feature of HDDLife is that it allows the user to configure what it should do in case it detects something fishy about your hard drive which can be either turning off the computer or send a warning e-mail. Although it is extremely easy to use and designed to be user friendly, there are also features for advanced users, one of those is the feature accessible through File –> Save Report which will give the user a detailed report of what HDDLife had done. As you can see from the screenshot below, HDDLife also change your normal hard drive icon to show its current state, this icon is fully skinable. In my opinion, it is an useful feature, however, some of my friends considered it to be counter-productive, in case you disagree with me, you can always disable this feature.

HDDLife for Notebook

Although HDDLife is an excellent software, it’s too limited in features. It might be for the sake of user-friendliness but some extra optional useful features like auto-backup periodically, in my opinion, wouldn’t hurt anyone. It is also very puzzling as to why HDDLife for Notebook costs $49, nearly double the price of HDDLife Professional. I understand that HDDLife for Notebook is fine tuned for laptop and has some extra tricks up its sleeves but $35 seems like a much more reasonable price to me.

Dumb & Dumber

June 14th, 2006

The assignment deadline is on 16/6. I promised to do the C++ assignment for some of my friends since they are not very good at programming, I did it and sent them the assignment a few days ago. However, yesterday, I received a phone call from a Mauritian guy (his name is Kevin) who I did the assignment for, keep in mind that this guy is in his last semester and going to graduate in a few months:

Me: “Hello”
Kevin: “Hi, I received the file you sent me earlier. Thanks a lot.”
Me: “Any time”
Kevin: “I don’t know what happened but I couldn’t open the file”
Me: “What did you do?”
Kevin: “Let me see again…”
Kevin: “OK, I logged in to my mailbox. Opened your mail and trying to download the file but it’s in some strange format, .zip or something, now Internet Explorer is asking me what I want to do with it.”
Kevin: “There are 2 options: To open it with WinRAR or to save it. What do I do now?”
Me: “Just open it with WinRAR”
Kevin: “Right. But now there are 3 .cpp files?”
Me: “Dude, there are 3 questions in the assignment so there are 3 files, what do you expect?”
Kevin: “OK. So what do I do with these 3 files?”
Me: “Just double click on any of the files to view its content”
Kevin: “OK. I did that but it opened in NotePad.”
Me: “What do you want then?”
Kevin: “The instruction is to submit the assignment in WinWord format.”
Me: “What the fuck is wrong with you? If you want it in a Word file then just copy it from NotePad and paste it in your fucking word document.”
Kevin: “Oh, OK. I understand. Thanks a lot, yeah. Bye!”
Me: “Bye!”

Poem

June 19th, 2006

I don’t know who wrote this poem but it is very funny (Sorry if you cannot understand Vietnamese):
